If Microsoft reinvents the wheel… what shape would it be?

I'm no fan of Microsoft's frustrating products but the latest Office software has me fuming and I haven't even bought the thing.

I'm being bombarded with people sending me documents with the .docx extension.

Now I can't open these things because I don't use a Microsoft Office suite on my personal computing machine.

At work I use Microsoft Office software that does not allow the installation of any Microsoft patch to allow the opening of any .docx documents.

I don't see why I should have to install something new anyway.

And while we're on the subject of Office 2007. I do spend some time in an institution that does have the software installed on several computing machines.

Why the redesign of all the familiar menus and toolbars?

I now have no idea where anything is and find I'm unable to use some of the basic Word and Excel options I've been used to using for the past 10 years.

Just give me fine minutes in a room with the designer who thought that was a good idea.

Give a bunch of Microsoft designers a wheel and ask them for update suggestions, and I bet they'd come up with a square design.

Sure it needs a bit more grunt from the engine to get things going but look how safe it is to park on a hill.
