You're way too late with the dog and cat diary

Radio wag in Brisbane needs to wake up and smell the web.

Running out of time on his morning talkback show this morning he tells me he hasn't time to bring me the diary of a dog and a cat he's just discovered.

Never mind, he says suddenly remembering he's not in tomorrow. "I'll tell you on Wednesday, it's hilarious."

Nearly anyone with e-mail will have been sent this joke years ago. Anyone else who can't wait until Wednesday will do a quick web search and discover nearly 2-million references to the search term "diary of a dog".

Top search result for me hit jackpot, thanks to naturalist Lisa Shea.

Here's a little excerpt of teh excerpts.

EXCERPTS FROM A DOG'S DIARY

Day number 180
8:00 am - OH BOY! DOG FOOD! MY FAVORITE!
9:30 am - OH BOY! A CAR RIDE! MY FAVORITE!
9:40 am - OH BOY! A WALK! MY FAVORITE!
...

And on it goes. As for the diary of the cat.

EXCERPTS FROM A CAT'S DIARY

DAY 752 - My captors continue to taunt me with bizarre little dangling objects. They dine lavishly on fresh meat, while I am forced to eat dry cereal. The only thing that keeps me going is the hope of escape, and the mild satisfaction I get from ruining the occasional piece of furniture. Tomorrow I may eat another houseplant.
...

I'll be honest, when I first read this years ago I howled with laughter.

My point is that (a) the radio radio wag is behind the times for not seeing the joke earlier, and (b) for his stupid forward-promote to Wednesday on the assumption the whole world (Brisbane) will wait for him to deliver and not go searching the web for themselves.

While of the subject of dogs and cats, I'm reminded of something I heard on the TV a few months ago.

Dogs have owners, cats have staff.

How true. I expect to hear that on the wag's radio program in a few years, if he's still there.

Now where did I put the one about giving a cat a pill....?
