Just wait a Gates' breath

Is it me, or is does it seem to take longer each day for certain software to open on Microsoft machines?

You click on a document icon and nothing appears to happen.

You click again. Then again. Then again.

Finally the egg-timer appears but this seems to slow the system even further.

Finally your Word document - or whatever it was you were trying to open - reveals itself.

I know others experience the problem because when you're talking to someone on the telephone and they need to get some extra information, you can feel the frustration as they wait for the relevant files to open.

"Won't be a minute," they lie.

I name this uncomfortable pause in time a Gates' breath, in honour of its founder and developer Bill Gates.

So next time you're faced with a lengthy wait for a Microsoft machine to do something you now have something more honest to say to those waiting.

"Just wait a Gates' breath and I'll have that information for you."

They'll understand.
