Obscure Box
I'm glad I don't live here
I've never heard of of a place called "Dismal Swamp" but it tops the
list of "The most unfortunate suburb names in Australia" (Friday 9 May 2008) as reported on LIVENEWS.com.au.
The South Australian suburb is in Wattle Range Council's area, just north of Mt Gambier, but rates not a mention on the authority's website.
It's latest claim to fame is due to a list of unpopular suburb names compiled by the real-estate website domain.com.au. A suburb search there shows the place had a population of 5,291 at the last count.
Lucky people.
Also making the unpopular suburb list were Fiddle Town (NSW), Indented Head (Vic), Soily Bottom Point (NSW), Bogan (NSW), Coconuts (NSW), Pitt Town Bottoms (NSW), Yorkey's Knob (Qld), Fannie Bay (NT) and Watanobi (NSW).
No mention of Queensland's other Knob suburb - Bald Knob, population 4,552, on the Sunshine Coast.
